5 Ways To Celebrate “National Cat Day” Whether Or Not You Have A Pet Kitty

So it’s time to gear up for the fall season holidays! No, I’m not talking about Halloween or Thanksgiving but I am talking about October 29…National Cat Day!

Why Celebrate National Cat Day?

National Cat Day was founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige, a pet & family lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate, as a day to celebrate cats and help raise awareness about the number of cats in need of rescue and adoption. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that approximately 3.2 million cats enter animal shelters nationwide every year. When you adopt a cat, everyone benefits. Your new pet gets a second chance at a great life, the shelter gets the ability to care for another animal, and you get a new lifelong friend that is also beneficial to your overall health!

We adopted two cats from our local ASPCA and they quickly became part of our family. Sadly, our oldest cat passed away but our Lexi, who is the featured image for this post, is the sweetest pet you could ever have. She is especially in love with my husband. Lexi can actually differentiate between the sound of our garage doors. When she hears Larry’s garage door opening, she always runs into the kitchen and waits by the door to greet him! It cracks me up every time. Of course, I do not get that same devotion!

I do think it is important to celebrate as many things as we can, as much as we can. So why not celebrate your love for cats! Here are some suggestions on how to celebrate National Cat Day whether or not you have a pet kitty:

5 Ways To Celebrate If You Have A Cat

  1. Treat your pet cat extra special with a favorite treat or toy.
  2. Brush your cat to remove excess hair.
  3. Enjoy some cat-shaped cookies (baked or purchased).
  4. Post a picture of your kitty and tag #nationalcatday or #lovecatsmore on social media.
  5. Encourage friends and family to adopt a cat.

And If You Don’t…

  1. Wear something feline-inspired.
  2. Watch lots of internet cat videos.
  3. Visit a cat cafe in your neighborhood.
  4. Donate supplies at your local animal shelter.
  5. Consider adopting a cat.

Since I am not a fan of having open pans of kitty litter on full display in our home, I like these two litter box enclosures. The wood and the wicker coordinate well with our room furnishings. The cat door is a great way to allow Lexi to go downstairs into our basement without requiring me to keep the door open. And the reason why she loves the basement so much is that we set up a cat tower for her to peer out the window!
